Happy. Any day I am alive and healthy, I try to be grateful.

what was your 13 year old self wearing?I went through a lot of “fashion” phases at this age. You’d often find me in some oddly paired clothing combinations like a 90s floral bandage dress with birkenstocks and socks (Yikes!) or some baggy pants with a body suit worn over a big padded bra and a Malcom X hat with a pony tail going through the hole in my cap. Probably the most adventurous outfit I wore was colorful dashiki pants set with a matching cap, bought by my dad, brought all the way from Africa on one of his mission trips. Also, I wore clothing from my mom’s closet and clothing ( often a flannel or an oversized skateboarding shirt) stolen from my boy friends.

what will your 50 year old self be wearing?

Only time will tell, but I hope something cheerful.

how important is individual style to you?
Very important. Life is short and I want to be able to express myself in different ways. Style is one very fun way to express my life philosophy.

what inspires what you wear?
Most of the time, I’m inspired by an inner feeling of gaiety and an appreciation for life.
I want my outfits to be upbeat. I want them to exude adventure, which is why I dress like a cowgirl a lot of the time, especially when I’m on a road trip. But I’m also inspired by fun stuff like vintage Versace and Moschino, vintage skate wear like Vision Street Wear & Jimmy Z, and then formidable types like cowgirls, tough chicks, The Teds, Kelly Bundy, Tracy Lords (Wanda Woodward) in Crybaby.

what items do you tend to continually replace in your wardrobe?
I guess shoes and socks because they get a lot of wear. I have so much vintage clothing so I don’t usually have to replace any wardrobe pieces.

what are you obsessed with right now?
As far as clothing goes I’m obsessed with: suspenders, western bow ties, wool shorts, pop art prints, cigarette pants, turn of the century undergarments, mohair, 50s wiggle dresses and suits or vintage matching sets. As far as learning, living and loving goes, I’m obsessed with square dancing, flat foot dancing, taking film photos, listening to Steve Earle, talking walks and drinking wine in the evenings, hanging with my boyfriend, my niece & new nephew.

my wawa cowl for ofakind is finally up, & i've been waiting for just this opportunity to share the photos that ériver hijano(below) took at our past shoot of the blush taupe & gray wool limited knits, 31of a kind. as well, i loved the cowl with the model & her pink tipped hair on the wet streets of new york just as much! also, please the creme version in my shop, as i just received a very few skeins in the mail recently, this Argentine wool is really hard to get my hands on. an afternoon in toronto

ofakind asked me (in addition to the exclusive knits) to do my own mini guide to vintage shopping in toronto, although this task is truly impossible, the city is so vast, with so much to offer. instead i agreed to do my own afternoon in toronto, so jasonlee & i met up w/ our friend jeffrey & we went out for lunch, coffee, i dropped off some knits at robber & peeked into my favorite vintage shop in search of a new coat & also searched for lula #13 (all around the queen west/ossington area).

i've lived in toronto, in a few places, & by far, i loved living in the junction, & unfortunately i couldn't post all the new galleries & shops popping up around there now, its really exciting. i'm embarrassed by how small the guide is, we were really cramped for time that day & it was pretty chilly too. also, i wish i could have mentioned my favorite places to eat in chinatown, also favorite korean bbq & my favorite record shop, oh well! heres a few of the extra photos not included in the article posted here.

always coveting about the clothes at robber, these were two pieces i really loved, including the samantha pleet cape & the cameron dress by steve alan, other favorites carried at robber (i can only dream of owning)
include dace, brooklyn tailors, lover, phillip sparks, ect, (&i'm sure i've borrowed all these & more for the shop photos too!).

its been hard to find the time to update & blog, but i'm really excited to finally share these few photos (more to share soon), all taken by eriver hijano again (& w/ caley jones modeling), of these from the collaboration knits i did along with audrey cantwell of ovate & tarantula sisters.
i took a few of the fur pom pom merino toques to city of craft (&they sold out). you can now grab them in the good night, day shop as well as the welland sweater in black merino Uruguayan wool, that is naturally dyed & spun thick & thin, w/ gorgeous black leather tassles c/o audrey. also, i've added a ready made section to the shop (& i hope to be adding more to this section very soon), & of course a custom section where you can have the options of colour, ect. i'ii try & post the rest of the new photos of the new knits very soon.

the waiting after a photoshoot for the end result is always the hardest, of course in this case i can't get too upset in this matter, since eriver actually develops all the film himself too, so impressive, right, what a purist? so obviously the wait is worth it! heres just a few of the photos taken on my own camera from this friday. as you can see, as i was too rushed & hampered down w/ suitcases full of knits for city of craft, so it was impossible to style c/o robber again this time (sadly), so instead i had to improvise with my own closet & make it work. also, you might spot the knits i collaborated with audrey cantwell & the ofakind exclusive cowl. thanks to caley for stepping in to model for this.

my city of craft weekend

my first city of craft weekend, & thrilled that good night, day was apart of this local event! as usual, a lot of sleepless days (&weeks) of knitting went into all of this. just to make things that much more hectic the day before w/ many suitcases (a real pain in the ass w/ all the buses, streetcars & subways ahead of us ), & w/ enid too, we fit in a photoshoot w/ eriver for new knits (&enid was treated to a movie w/ our friend & host for the weekend w/ jlee). obviously, it was all worth it. the first day of craft, & i had teh best company w/ jason & of course jeffrey too, as well as our friend samantha of pinpals also a vendor from montreal & jenny was at the worn booth too. the night ended w/ much need korean bbq & beers. & the second day, started off w/ completely selling out of the merino headbands right away , they were a hit, wish i'd knit more (& you can again order the creme & the very popular black simcoe headband online in the good night day shop now) & also the new merino knit toque w/ vintage skunk fur pompoms sold out too (to enid's disappointment, as i promised her one if they didn't), that i collaborated on w/ audrey of ovate (those will be in the shop soon). finished the night, w/ a quick stop into 69vintage just across the street (i just have to ask how i did i ever get by this long w/out ever visiting this shop before, an instant favorite) & then vietnamese w/ family that came to support, so amazing, thanks to everyone that came out, really. check out this city of craft blog post w/ photos by celine kim (& yes that is my black merino headband worn by sandi of deadweight, yah!)

i can't say enough sweet things about audrey & i am smitten! at the last fall puces pop we traded some knits for a vintage mink fur coat, & audrey modeled & styled this amazing editorial for her second issue of her zine named after her vintage boutique tarantula sisters. audrey is wearing her own limited grey alpaca markham collar, her own extra-chunky merino lambton cowl in black, her own merino black elora toque & her own chunky merino simcoe braided headband in black.

what i call my make-shift studio of sorts

well its really a secret no longer anyhow, i'm thrilled to announce my lil' good night, day shop will soon be added to the list of amazing designers at ofakind & i'ii be offering an exclusive limited knit ( in two colours, & hand knit of a wool from argentina, that is fair trade & from a women's collective). as a sort of mini introduction, before the big day, jamie asked me to take photos of my work studio & answer a few questions. & so here is the full interview & all of the photos. & here is the ofakind mini-pre feature.
it was teh perfect excuse to finally clean up this area & make a real mini studio/work area (if you can call it that).you can view a large image of the above photo here.

I would love to hear more about the following things:
-The big poster with the Chinese girl smoking on your wall. Where did you get it? What do you like about it?

-about that poster, i bought this poster at least 8 years ago, maybe 10 even, when i was living in toronto, from a small packed shop in chinatown. i was told it is indeed a genuine vintage ad from china (who knows?!) & there were stacks of them, i was broke & narrowed it down to this one.

i think i was drawn to the colours ,the ladies smile & her seductive way of holding her cigarette perhaps. i wish i could have bought up all the wonderful ads he had. the shop no longer exists, so i wonder what happen to the rest.

-The book collection on your wall shelf: Are the books your current reading list? How do they inspire you or relate to your creative process? Which one is your favorite and why?

-about that book collection, i only recently pulled off all the knick knacks from these shelves to replace them with some of our art books & zines that we've been collecting for years. i was inspired by a scene in the film melancholia, that had book shelves that displayed their art books similar to this. we plan to rearrange & change up the books, no point hiding them just for the binding to show in a book shelf. i love all of these books, but i think they all have the common theme of being intimate images in some way or another, & although i love all kinds of photography, i am most drawn to realism & portraits.

-Who is the person in the framed portrait? Who drew it/ where did you get it, and what is its significance to you?

-the framed portrait is of malcom, & was drawn by my boyfriend jason lee for a cam archer film called wild tigers i have known (for the soundtrack art). it is one of my favorite drawings of his, & up close you can really see all the tiny circles of pencil crayon & colours layered on each other. early in our relationship my boyfriend won me over by giving me drawings ( i think a pencil drawing he did of anais nin really

sealed the deal & we've been on & off together for over a decade now).

-If there is a fire and you can only save one object from the whole room, what would it be and why?

-if there were a fire i would probably save some of the art books because we may need them some day when were broke (i can't tell you how many times we've considered selling the ryan mcginly

book, because its first edition & before he got so huge) or the larry clark books. but so far, i'm happy to say we've always managed to find rent or whatever some other way, & have gotten to keep our books.

weekend of friends, family, wine & food

although its another mundane monday & back to knitting & my worries, a headache (& enid on the couch home sick from school)... i had a weekend that was just what included everything i've been craving & needed, old friends, family, food, & wine. all photos c/o jlee, she has this way of capturing an image before you even realize she's taken out her camera.

although, its pretty much winter cold weather here, i still have a hard time giving up iced coffees & not wearing socks. well at least the simcoe braided headband (in nude) is keeping me warm, really hurry if you want to get your hands on one of these (the cashmere/merino wool is very limited & i just can't get my hands on it anymore & the grey is already sold out).

OH at 50...gee vintage vintage. I plan on still wearing heels and platforms....no flats for this chick.

how important is individual style to you?
Individual style happens either when your a teen or maybe in your 20s. I think I have always wanted to "standout" not in a crazy way. Well I guess getting tattooed might be crazy...as far as clothes. I started thrifting when I was in high school and just loved it. It depends on the person, from having a vintage store and knowing the customers, it really depends on who they are. Some love vintage but they always say I am not brave enough to wear it so they wear F21 stuff....ok. Some come in and they know how to mix the new and vintage together.

what inspires what you wear?
I guess I really love 70's style clothing, from disco to hippie. I always loved it when I was in high school and I still love it now. I guess I like the style of the hair, mine is long.I am also lazy so I just like to air dry it and let it be.

what items do you tend to continually replace in your wardrobe?
I do have the option of selling my random tshirts or other stuff that doesnt fit anymore at my store.

what are you obsessed with right now?
Oh man shoes, mostly Frye boots or even their heels they are super cute. I also love bib/empire waist angel sleeve dresses. They work great as I am getting a bigger belly. I liked them before but now I am always on the hunt for them!

although, its our small bedroom that really has turned into my own knitting factory, & i never let anyone really in there, because its my chaotic mess of wool, that is all organized as makes sense to me. the rest of our space does tend to also collect pieces & remnants of my knitting, including, from top, displaying new to me postcards for the shop (especially for city of craft, so i won't run out, as usual), tagging & packaging, from below, throughout the day, orders to be packed & already packed orders stuffed in totes to go (that gorgeous lace screened tote is c/o mon petit fantome, & the other is my very own, just a very few left in the shop now), & our kitty mable who never ever bothers w/ my wool balls (strange i know), some samples for ny!!! (of argentina wool), on jason lee's day off i put him to work wrapping up orders & rolling up wool balls for me... (ps. you might think we have a pretty tidy place, you'd be mistaken)

finally i have become one of those with a bike (been envying you bike folks forever), & its been at least a decade since i even owned a bike, its about time considering i don't have a drivers license & hugely support public transportation. my friend tracie (a complete bike nerd, that is a huge compliment by the way) scoured for jsut the right bike she knew i would love & even re-built the tire (so sweet). as you can see, i still haven't ventured past quiet neighborhoods, still need a helmet & a bell to brave that, i'm pretty scared to death of moving cars, should be interesting. oh & i cut off my mop, really needed a change,i may tweak the length shorter & waiting for the inevitable hair fade, heres the photo that really inspired the cut. also, had no idea i had such big hair, so i need to figure how to tame it still.

back in montreal for good night, day at puces pop, & we couldn't have asked for nicer weather (although all the untimely sunshine was maybe not the ideal weather for selling alpaca collars), ...& even nicer friends (of course, new friends too), drinking in the parks, sharing food w/ some of the very best folks i know(& met), & studio visits too (montreal is always a source of enormous inspiration on all the senses). miss you already montreal.

i've noticed i'm feeling so drawn to things on the darker/less colourful palette lately, (as a girl who dressed in her teens & beyond in a lot of black on black, i kinda retired it slightly, for awhile...). & everything else in the colour paltette of plum, burnt orange, grey, black, creme,tan... all that i've been knitting for good night, day it just really stands out & inspires me style wise. these colours are so striking, & the textures of the knits, really allow for a bold & ironic simplicity, that is modern. just days until montreal & puces pop! spent today tagging items, knitting of course, some braided headbands today & chunky cowls, also dyed up totes in varying burnt orange & plum.

i was insanely ecstatic about the opportunity to work along w/ Ériver on this new look-book for my new shop, good night, day & as a long time fan of his work i knew this was going to be amazing. so i just wanted to share some of my own recent favorites of his newer work. can you tell i'm a sucker for his portraits? as this is now post-photo shoot i am not surprised at the intimacy that seems to evoke his subjects, i witnessed how he formed an obvious trust level with the model right away, he seemed to instantly be patient & calming, as well as meticulous & determined, it was really impressive. & i can only hope i can get another opportunity such as this again, it was one of the best days. i can hardly wait to see the photos go up in the shop, so stay posted, & please check out behind the scenes photos from the day here. all photos c/o eriver hijano

behind the scenes: good night, day knits

obviously, not exactly a typical day, i felt i should pinch myself. i still can't imagine having such days all the time, i could get used to that... in any case, had a pure perfect photoshoot for my new winter accessories & apparel knits for good night, day's lookbook w/ clothing provided by robber (thanks erin!). it was surreal & seeing my knits in such a context, as i had only ever imagined, makes all the stress of having a small independent business so worth it. i matched & styled the clothing from dace, lover, mociun, brooklyn tailors, steven allen (can you even imagine), w/ my extra-bulky knits, by proportions & colour, as well as contexts such as mens wear inspired. it was a such a pleasure to work with photographer Ériver, he was really wonderful, taking great care in all the details, & was really patient & gave tremendous direction with the model bryanna. we couldn't have asked for a more sweet model, & i was in complete awe of her dutch beauty, especially when she wore the black turban she was of another time. & the rest of the photos i snapped here (because if you don't take them it didn't happen right, strange how it really comes to that sometimes).

i will be taking everything w/ me to montreal for puces pop (& somethings may not return), & other things will be available in the shop soon too (i have to really stress that most of the items, especially the sweaters, super chunky lambton cowls & the tubans are very limited number available). if you see something you feel you love, please don't hesitate to contact me, so you don't miss out, i'm happy to make an invoice for you, &offer it pre-sale.

there is a lot less of summer left to enjoy, & fall is already being pushed in our direction. although summer is the season i long for, it is always too short & quick, yet i am excited for fall, & all the things evolving around the new shop good night, day. & in just under a month i'ii be back in montreal for puces pop.

spent the day yesterday (w/ jasonlee & rebecca too) meeting w/ erin of robber & picking out possible pieces to work into the collab lookbook for robber/good night, day. finally met the photographer Ériver Hijano in person, & now couldn't be more excited to work with such a talented guy. (more on that soon)

enid participated in a few drop in classes at the AGH this summer (she loved it), she also acquired new glasses too, a new hair cut from sara-mae (w/ teal bangs c/o mom)& i can't help but think she is a tiny spitting image of julie delpy in 2 days in paris. (i should really screencap that)

in any case, thrilled to share my love for chad merrit, a friend who has a million talents, & inspires me to find the beauty in all things dark & spooky. i think that chad must be from another past time, he seems so wise, is always offering me sound advice & is the sweetest, most caring person around. this interview is really astounding & touches on so much of his wonderful personality, can't wait to see you in Canada soon chad!

name, age, location?
My name is Chad Merritt, I'm 34, and live in the very hot, but lovely, Austin, TX.

What kind of day are you having?
I've been, thankfully, busy with comissions, some exciting collaborations, and working on a piece for a group show in San Francisco! I also just applied for a position to my favorite book store, so I'm crossing my fingers. All in all, a really lovely day!

can you describe what you do?
Primarily, I am a papercut artist. I cut out images, from paper, mainly silhouette style, with my trusty xacto knife! I began doing illustrations (mainly pencil and watercolor), but when I discovered papercutting, that's all I wanted to do. I was also in the band, St. Mary's, for 6 years. Now that that is over, I've slowly started work on a solo project called, "beatrix".

Have you always been creative?
My Mom claims I always have been! I went to a very rural school, in Southwest Louisiana, that did not have any music or arts classes. We did have a gifted and talented program, once a week, that I was in from 3rd to 8th grade. I studied photography in that program, which I've been getting back into, and at 6th grade I was developing my own photos in our school's tiny darkroom. I then went to university to study art, and after 2 1/2 years, I promptly dropped out...classic story

Do you remember some of your first creative childhood pursuits?
I was obsessed with three things as a kid: flying, vampires, and witches (apparently I still am obsessed with witches!). I would spend my time trying to design flying contraptions that would allow to fly around our backyard! None of them worked, unfortunately, and I have the scars to prove it. Other than that, you could find me either drawing, reading, or listening to my records on my Peter Pan travel record player.

Can you talk about what is inspiring you right now?
Witches! Hahaha, I'm only partially kidding I've always been inspired by nature...it's destructive and creative forces. I love animals. My very first pet was a fawn, that I raised, oh so originally named, Bambi. I'm inspired by victorian or naturistic forms of magic, and how people connect themselves to nature. Fairy tales, mythology, and occult symbology are eternally inspiring. I just spent a week long vacation, exploring the woods of Washington state and Portland...can't get more inspirational than that! Also music is a huge thing for me. I always work with music playing, and I love seeking out new bands and expanding my listening horizons.

What makes you feel most like yourself?
Many things...playing or listening to music. Laying in bed, all day, with the windows open, the breeze coming through, and losing myself in a great book. Working on my papercuts, where I can create my own little worlds with just my paper and xacto knives. Lately it's been sewing costumes and setting up fantastical photoshoots!

What do you wish for?
More kindness! I wish people would have more patience and understanding...I know it may sound silly, but it's nice to be nice! I pride myself on being a sweet person, and strive to put myself in other peoples' shoes. I wish to collaborate more with awesome folks. So far, I've done a paperdoll/silhouette set with my dear friend, Amy Earles, and we're actually working on another now! Oh yeah, and a boyfriend...that would be great, haha.

How do you enjoy spending your down time?
Nothing is more fun for me than hanging out with my amazing roommates, having a great meal, and watching a film. I also love going out to movies, and seeing shows. Austin is a great place for both of those things!

i can't believe, i haven't posted these gorgeous photos yet of isabelle in the sold out bancroft sweater. of course, i had to ask my close friend izzy of la vie c'est ye ye to help contribute & participate in my knits&bloggers project (sh'es practically like my knitting muse & she is so supportive). although, this bancroft sweater was part of a small ballet-inspired collection that i retired, & also i sold out of the limited merino hand spun +hand dyed wool. however, i can't help but realize how amazing these simple knits are, & how perfect they could be for the grey variegated Uruguayan wool i haven't knit with yet (& perhaps an orillia shrug too, another sold out piece that was a favorite to knit).

we went north

we headed up north, & got away from it all. as much as i would have loved to spend the entire time swimming in the lake, it wasn't always so warm, so we did go out for lots of long walks into the nearest town (passed by dream cottages & homes) & found an antique shop, where i picked up two books, valerie & her week of wonders (the film caps here), & also a vintage girls annual w/ the most fantastic illustrations & stories ($5), i'ii post some book illustrations on my tumblr later. i do miss the campfire nights, w/ smores & coronas.

love of the "babushka"

the word "babushka" refers to describe a scarf folded into a triangle, worn over the hair & then worn tied under the chin. the word babushka is actually a russian word which means grandma, & describes the use of the style seen worn by mostly elderly eastern european women. yet, the babushka can look completely modern too!

just before we leave for camping, i was finishing up some orders, & wanted to share some results of dying with teal & violet. (also, did you see the blog post siri wrote including the welland dip dyed in peach & also the lovely hairs that also looked ombre dyed.) as well, my leather tags arrived, just what i wanted too, perfectly simple. & in case you were curious, the new shop takes its name after the modernist book good morning, midnight by jean rhys, she took her name from the first line in a emily dickinson poem, & the shop uses the last line of the poem.

today its insanely sweltering in the shade, its actually 38 celsius today & something like 44 celsius w/ humidy. i love the heat & the sun, although i do hate how i look tanned (go figure!), oh & how my hair is also insanely frizzy & puffy (oh well, thats what floppy hats are for). in any case, the weather today inspired me to create this inspiration collage around the leeds merino bra in my shop, the variegated merino version & the verlaine nude merino leeds.

not wanting to waste any part of summer, i take my knitting with me (& as long as i have lots of 45 sunscreen lotion too, no tanning allowed in this family). it can be difficult re-arranging shop hours & knitting times around enid aka schools out for summer, but we make it work, & the outdoors is always the best kind of free. & although, my son luke is 17 & i respect that he may not want to be apart of a blog, but just this once, i do want to share this, he graduated with honors!

sometimes, i'm overcome & emotionally burnt out with the disadvantages that come along with rather unstable circumstances & then i realize that i really wouldn't have it any other way. & learn over & over, not to take things quite so personally. & finally, that everything else is just a wonderful side effect. with the launch of my new shop, which is really like starting allover again, it has of course been difficult. yet, i've had the luck of friends & also fellow comrades that support dreams like mine, & who want to help out, for the sake of just that. the new good night, day shop has received some recent blog posts of support that make it all worth it. thanks to these blogs, beaux mondes (& also working w/ stephanie & erin of robber), sally jane vintage, victoire, the time is grey, stylebook, elskan, & variacje. also, thanks to everyone for just sharing on facebook, tumblr& twitter too, it all means a lot. & although i've had recent design days like this at good night, day , aka ripping apart of a sweater catastrophe, after days of design tweaking & endless stitches. things are still exciting as i knit up some items for odessa, to send along as items for a plaid photo shoot. soon, i get to take a very quick camping trip with the family &even the cat, which is something we really appreciate & don't take for granted. i hope to just take it easy & not worry all the time & stress, if i can ... i hope everyone else finds sun & stress free time to themselves too, i know its corny, but...

you may may already be familiar w/ anais & her blog the time is grey, her style is iconic indeed. as well, as featuring her in a style her own post, i've also been lucky enough to have anais as a participant of my knits & bloggers project (she is one of a few very handpicked lady bloggers). anais is the first blogger to recieve & post, this is just a sneak peek of what is availabe in the new shop good night, day. i can't wait to see her style up the leeds veralin nude halter top in the new version!
